Welcome to another What’s on Your Workdesk Wednesday.  Hosted by the inimitable Julia, this is where many of us hang out on Wednesdays, checking out what other crafty and creative people are up to.

Today’s workdesk finds me in the midst of making a black cardgan/jacket/sweater.  I’m using this fabric from Fabric.com.  You can’t really see in the photo, but it has a nice, nubbly texture (which translates into an utter mess of black bits on the floor once you cut it, lol.)

Boucle Sweater Knit Novelty Stripe Black

I’m lining it with a beautiful black brocade. I’ll show more details when it’s closer to being done.  This is the pattern I’m using:

The directions are by Nancy Zieman, and they’re pretty good with lots of helpful tips, however for some reason I was thinking this jacket was fully lined.  Since the sweater fabric frays so much, it really needs to be fully lined.

That’s why you see this book on the table:

Sandra Betzina’s Power Sewing is awesome for getting that extra bit of finished, professional look in your garments.  I’m following her directions for adding in a back pleat to the lining and bagging the lining.  I tried reading through the bagging directions, visualizing each step, but got utterly confused.  So, I think I’m just going to follow each step carefully and trust that it will work out.

If I mess up?  Well, that’s what seam rippers are for, right? ::::::grin::::::

Happy woyww and happy creating!

  1. Seam rippers are great, I’ve had good use of them! I used to sew a lot before the stamping crush, I even sew my wedding dress 🙂

Love the pattern and the fabric you are using.

    Warm hugs

    1. Hi Maarit, Thanks for stopping by!

I made my wedding dress, too. That was nearly 25 years ago. I wish I knew then what I know now, about sewing… and life. 🙂

Seam rippers are utterly essential, for “As ye sew, so shall you rip.” lol

  2. Oooh, that’s nice. I can’t wait to see it finished. And I already know that your turquoise jewelry looks better than the model’s.

  3. Lovely jacket pattern and I’m sure it’s going to look great in that fabric. I used to be quite a dressmaker when younger but gave up when fabric became so expensive here in the UK … and conversely clothes got less expensive to buy. I think with your experience you’ll have no trouble lining the jacket – and yes, the seam ripper is an essetial tool 🙂 Look forward to seeing the jacket on WOYWW when finished. Elizabeth x #53

  4. Have to agree with Elizabeth, it just became too expensive to do. I used to do all sorts of sewing, clothes, furnishings, decorations etc, but I even went and sold my Richo overlocker I was that dis-illusioned, maybe one day the old Newhome will come out again, ………….but then maybe not, depends on how expensive Card making becomes!
Even knitting is expensive now-a-days, thankfully hubby has no idea how much I spend on Card making, but I look forward to the finished project, good luck, xx

    1. It sounds like I should count myself fortunate to still have reasonably priced fabric available.

And, yes, I agree it’s a good thing that our husbands don’t have a clear grasp on just how much we spend on our hobbies. 😉
