Happy What’s on Your Workdesk Wednesday once again!

sewing room before bookcases (1)

Today’s mess desk is one I’ve been looking forward to showing you for a while now. When we moved into this house I did mostly quilting, so I took the large empty wall on one side of my sewing room, covered it with white flannel and used it as my quilt design wall.

It saw a LOT of use. (That’s it on the right.)

Fast forward 16 years and I only make the occasional quilt (still trying to complete a bunch of unfinished tops, though.)  The areas under & around my table and along the wall have filled with stuff and I decided that space would be better put to use with a couple of bookcases.

My first plan was to pick up two cheapies at Ikea, but hubby offered to custom make what I needed so that it would fit  exactly what I wanted. He designs &  builds custom cabinetry for a living and he does it well, so who am I to turn him down?

The downside to this plan is that I could have had those Ikea bookshelves up and running over two years ago. 🙂 The up side is that these are made to my exact specifications. (Like a space that perfectly fits the press, lower right.) Definitely worth the wait.

So, my workdesk this work is just a pile of mess that shows me in a frenzy of tossing, figuring & rearranging. Check back next week and I’ll show it all sorted.

In the meantime, if you’d like to see more interesting and creative pursuits on workdesks, check out our blog party over at Julia’s.

Happy creating!

    1. Well, in his defense he did have to work on it after full days on the job, his health isn’t great AND we didn’t have to extra cash for supplies until not too long ago.

He did jokingly thank me for not getting mad & throwing things cuz it was taking so long, lol.

  1. Wow! No wonder you’re so productive. You have a LOT of supplies and reference material in that room, and it looks like you can actually find it all! Good job.

    1. Gary & I were discussing your comment this morning. Does stuff=productivity? Not always, but it’s certainly helpful to a productive person to have resources. We know plenty of people who are ever accumulating stuff, but aren’t productive in the least.

Being able to find things, now THAT’s a huge aid to productivity, indeed. 🙂

  2. Just leaving a quick hello from Twiglet and Wipso as Annie hasn’t any broadband in her new home yet!! Your shelving etc looks great – we can never have enough craftty space! x Jo

    1. Oh, I still spend time looking for stuff, Angela, especially those things I think I’ve put in a logical place, but then can’t remember where later. 🙂

      Thanks for the visit!

  3. Yes, it always helps so much to organize for what you need now–rather than what you needed in the past. We all evolve our crafting over the years don’t we? At one time I thought that all I would ever do would be cross-stitch. Now I do so many other things and not nearly the amount of cross-stitch I used to do. Amazing. It’s kind of fun to make that mess while you’re organizing because you also tend to find lost things too! Happy WOYWW! Sandy Leigh #51

  4. Love the new shelves. I’ve started…again…sorting and organizing..hoping I’ll find stuff lost in the room of stash! And I still have the specter of moving hanging over me. Have a wonderful week. Look forward to an organized view next week. Hugs

  5. Project Shelf looks great fun – bet you have found lots of stash you had forgotten you had ! I started crafting with quilting too and still have a “Quilt Cupboard! I bought back then – I am getting back into a bit of sewing so it is finally getting some use again ! Looking forward to seeing the finished room !

  6. Hi Sandy, happy WOYWW. Your work room looks fabulous and the new shelves will soon be filled. It’s great to have a rearrange and tidy sometimes gives you a new lease of life (mojo). Cheers and enjoy RobynO#21

  7. Oh a custom made bookcase, what a luxury! I understand the downside too – I got the same with wanting to upgrade and old cabinet. It’s a nice idea, but somehow I lack the time to start. Indeed there is always a shortage of time. The bookcase looks great though, so nice that things fit without things sticking out of having to place them sideways or upside down.
The cleaning and organizing process is part of the crafting process too, once in a while it’s good to do as you see your stash again, fall in love with forgotten items again, plan to use up things and gather tons more of ideas!
    Thanks for the visit yesterday.
