Here’s yet another way to customize your jewelry and make it uniquely your own: create custom decorative ear wires.
What’s great about using these for your earrings is that you can make the ear wires an integral part of the design, rather than just a functional afterthought.
The wire working is simple and satisfying, and in the video I show a trick for making perfectly matched pairs of ear wires.
By the way, 20 or 18 gauge wire is best for ear wires. Any thicker and it may hurt to insert them, any thinner and they could potentially cut through the ear lobes.
If you’re looking for ideas for interesting things to do with ear wires, check out this Pinterest search for handmade ear wires. Lots of cool designs!
Some of the tools you may need:
- Round Nose Pliers
- Multi-step Ring Looping Plier 5, 7,10mm
- Flush Cutter
- Flat Nose Pliers
- Oval, Square, Round & Triangle Mandrel set (these are great if you’re making some of the bigger shapes)
- 20 gauge wire
- bench block
- chasing hammer
- file or cup burr
Enjoy the video and happy creating!
