Today’s workdesk finds me working on a puzzle.

How to fit all the pattern pieces for Burda 8292 onto the fabric available from this coat. (Yes, that is a two piece sleeve I’m trying to fit on a single piece sleeve.  It’s going to be tight, but I think I’ll make it.)

purple-coat

I love this purple boiled wool, but the two styles are not as similar as I thought.

Two things are in my favor: the original coat is about six sizes too big, AND it had a sewn on self-fabric scarf.  That scarf, which always annoyed me when I wore the coat, is going to be the saving grace.  It will provide the fabric for the collar (which only makes sense since it was sewn on in place of a collar) and it will provide an extension for the sleeves, which were obviously made for someone with arms about 10 inches shorter than mine.

So it looks like I’ll only have to buy a wee bit of lining fabric to add to the sleeve lining.  Actually, I should probably shop in my stash first.  “Scuse me for a sec.

====goes off to rummage in the fabric cabinet====

I’m back, and HA!  I found 1/2 yard of lavender lining fabric that will be perfect tucked away inside the sleeve linings.  It will be our little secret.  🙂

Maybe I’ll use some of that lavender lining for the pocketses as well.

Oh, and are you wondering why I’m posting possibly the most boring photo ever?  One of my workdesk?  Well, there are those of us who find it fascinating to see what’s on the desks of other creative people.  And we do this every Wednesday.  Hence the name, What’s on Your Workdesk Wednesday.  Check it out, it really is a lot of fun!

  1. That is a lovely color! I can’t wait to see the finished project! I would be to scared to start a jacket, but I’d love to learn how to sew my own clothing.

  3. Thanks for sharing an update on the coat. I thought that was just some decorative layer, not a scarf, but how nice that it is there for you to use. Indeed, the arms seem short for the size of the coat. Happy WOYWW!
