{"id":82,"date":"2008-12-01T14:02:06","date_gmt":"2008-12-01T19:02:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/?p=82"},"modified":"2011-12-20T21:33:46","modified_gmt":"2011-12-21T02:33:46","slug":"babys-first-christmas-gifts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/2008\/12\/01\/babys-first-christmas-gifts\/","title":{"rendered":"Baby&#8217;s First Christmas Gifts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What else is a new grandma to do for her granddaughter&#8217;s first Christmas except make her a dolly?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/Cadences-gift-8-smaller.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/Cadences-gift-8-smaller.jpg\" alt=\"raggedy ann doll and wooden cradle\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Traditionally Raggedy Ann has red hair, red &amp; white striped socks, black shoes and a red or blue calico dress, but\u00a0I love these non-traditional colors.<\/p>\n<p>There are some special fabrics included.\u00a0The apron is made from a petticoat I used to wear, the pink rick-rack is from her great-grandma Huntress&#8217; sewing stash, and her dress is a piece of fabric leftover from her cousin&#8217;s butterfly quilt.<\/p>\n<p>And, of course, grandpa had to get in on the act by making a cradle, complete with hand-cut dovetails.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/Cadences-gift-9-smaller.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/Cadences-gift-9-smaller.jpg\" alt=\"baby's first christmas ornament\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Grandma also decided that it was very important for Cadence to have a handmade &#8220;baby&#8217;s first Christmas&#8221; ornament. My grandma (Cady\u2019s great-great grandma) made the braided ribbon trim on the ornament.\u00a0 Kinda neat, I think. So much pink &amp; purple, so much fun!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/Cadences-gift-11-smaller.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/Cadences-gift-11-smaller.jpg\" alt=\"baby's first christmas ornament\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0 you&#8217;d like to make an ornament like this, it&#8217;s very easy.\u00a0 You could make them for just about any theme imaginable, new baby, first Christmas together, sports teams, favorite hobbies . . . Here are some general guidelines:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 Cover a 4&#8243; foam ball with a layer of batting.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0Run a row of gathering stitches around the edge of a\u00a013&#8243; circle of fabric.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 Insert the ball into the fabric circle and pull the gathers up tight.\u00a0 Hot gathers glue in place.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 Add whatever decorations you&#8217;d like to the ball.\u00a0 I used my inkjet printer to print &#8220;Cadence&#8217;s 1st Christmas 2008&#8221; onto sanded shrink plastic.\u00a0 I cut out the oval shape and then shrank it with a heat gun.\u00a0 Then I trimmed this with rat tail cord and ribbon roses.<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0 Starting at the gathered section, glue lengths of ribbon all around the ball.\u00a0 I left mine long to begin with and trimmed them later.<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0 Cover the raw edges of the gathers with ribbon trim, small toys, whatever you like.\u00a0 Make sure to add a hanging loop!<\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0 Add small charms to the ribbons.\u00a0 I used more images that were printed onto shrink plastic, punched out with paper punches and shrunk.
