Ever since over a year ago a friend gave us a cylindrical tin of tea bags\u00a0and every time I looked at it I pictured a castle turret with a dragon climbing on top. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/dragons-of-2015\/dragon-6-Rosalita-3.JPG\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/dragons-of-2015\/dragon-6-Rosalita-3.JPG\" alt=\"dragon #6 Rosalita 3\" width=\"299\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The tin is 2 1\/2 inches in diameter and 6 inches tall, but I never imagined the project being SO HUGE.<\/p>\n<p>Well, huge for what I&#8217;m used to. The finished sculpture is 14 inches from the base to the top of the flagpole. \u00a0<em>(The flagpole is a toothpick, just to give you an idea of scale.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/dragons-of-2015\/dragon-6-Rosalita-4.JPG\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/dragons-of-2015\/dragon-6-Rosalita-4.JPG\" alt=\"dragon #6 Rosalita 4\" width=\"450\" height=\"521\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The stone work, windows and turret top alone took a\u00a0week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/dragons-of-2015\/dragon-6-Rosalita-5.JPG\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/dragons-of-2015\/dragon-6-Rosalita-5.JPG\" alt=\"dragon #6 Rosalita 5\" width=\"451\" height=\"341\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Then<\/em> it was time to start on the dragon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/dragons-of-2015\/dragon-6-Rosalita-6.JPG\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/dragons-of-2015\/dragon-6-Rosalita-6.JPG\" alt=\"dragon #6 Rosalita 6\" width=\"449\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Somewhere in the middle of the project it became &#8220;that danged dragon&#8221; (or slightly stronger words which I shall not repeat.) \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/dragons-of-2015\/dragon-6-Rosalita-7.JPG\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/dragons-of-2015\/dragon-6-Rosalita-7.JPG\" alt=\"dragon #6 Rosalita 7\" width=\"449\" height=\"457\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I got discouraged along the way, but decided not to give in to the temptation to rush just to get it done. If I did that I knew the outcome would certainly be disappointing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/dragons-of-2015\/dragon-6-Rosalita-8.JPG\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/dragons-of-2015\/dragon-6-Rosalita-8.JPG\" alt=\"dragon #6 Rosalita 8\" width=\"300\" height=\"434\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday (Friday) I finally got to the final details: the base, the door, the wings and the flag.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I made a rose cane just for the flag. I used <a title=\"rose and leaf cane tutorial by Leigh Ross\" href=\"http:\/\/www.polymerclaycentral.com\/rose1.html\" target=\"_blank\">an excellent tutorial over at Polymer clay central by Leigh Ross<\/a>\u00a0for the rose and the leaves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/dragons-of-2015\/dragon-6-Rosalita-9.JPG\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/dragons-of-2015\/dragon-6-Rosalita-9.JPG\" alt=\"dragon #6 Rosalita 9\" width=\"449\" height=\"512\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was quite a trick figuring out how to make the cane into a flat flag with the cane showing on both sides, but it worked out.<\/p>\n<p>Some things I&#8217;ve learned in the past two weeks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Things always take longer in reality than you might think. <em>(Well, I knew that one already, but this really drove it home.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Creativity is sometimes just plain hard work!<\/li>\n<li>My favorite parts of sculpting are adding texture and detail, so sticking to a smaller scale would be wise from now on.<\/li>\n<li>Baked polymer clay can be heated with a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000QTFH58\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=secroforgapeo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B000QTFH58\" target=\"_blank\">heat tool<\/a>\u00a0(like scrapbookers use for heat embossing) for about 15 seconds to soften it. It will then be flexible enough to slightly reposition. This was how I got the dragon&#8217;s feet to cling to the tower.
