{"id":5870,"date":"2014-03-20T20:50:35","date_gmt":"2014-03-21T00:50:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/?p=5870"},"modified":"2017-05-25T19:40:05","modified_gmt":"2017-05-25T23:40:05","slug":"polymer-clay-eyes-faux-glass-eyes-make-march-day-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/2014\/03\/20\/polymer-clay-eyes-faux-glass-eyes-make-march-day-14\/","title":{"rendered":"Polymer Clay Eyes &#8211; Faux Glass Eyes &#8211; Make It In March Day 14"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s project is one I&#8217;ve been wanting to try since before Christmas when my December 2013 issue of Polymer Cafe arrived.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" alt=\"polymer cafe december 2013\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/polymer-cafe-december-2013.jpg\" width=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, I don&#8217;t know about you, but that Santa is WAY too creepy for me. \u00a0But I always read through all the step-by-step tutorials anyways, even if I&#8217;m not interested in the project, because you can learn something from everything, right?<\/p>\n<p>Wow, was I glad I did, because as I was wondering where Kellie got those great glass eyes, I realized she&#8217;d not only\u00a0<em>made\u00a0<\/em>them out of polymer clay , but she&#8217;d <em>shared<\/em> with us how to do it.<\/p>\n<p>Woot!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/clay-eye-iris-tools.JPG\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" alt=\"clay eye iris tools\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/clay-eye-iris-tools.JPG\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first step is to make a tool consisting of a 1\/8-inch (that&#8217;s 3mm for you smart folks who use metric) doughnut shape on a stick. <em>Sheesh, that&#8217;s one teeny-tiny doughnut.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This gets pressed into clay balls to make the shape of the iris and makes the pupil stand proud of the colored part of the eye. \u00a0Since I&#8217;ve been\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">into dragons and reptiles &amp; such, I made one with an elongated hole for cat and reptile eyes. \u00a0Once again I&#8217;m SO thankful for my\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0021GIVCA\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B0021GIVCA&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=secroforgapeo-20\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman';\">magnifying lamp<\/span><\/span><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=secroforgapeo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B0021GIVCA\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" name=\"graphics16\" align=\"BOTTOM\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0for doing such itty-bitty work.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d love to tell you more about the process, but it wouldn&#8217;t be right for me to share Kellie Mowat&#8217;s entire tutorial. I think it&#8217;s time to make a dragon to fit. Now, should it have green eyes or yellow eyes?<\/p>\n<p>Btw, the tutorial calls for using Fimo Liquid Gel (I think she meant <a title=\"Fimo Decorating Gel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B002PNNJ9Y\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B002PNNJ9Y&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=secroforgapeo-20\" target=\"_blank\">Fimo Deco Gel<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=secroforgapeo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B002PNNJ9Y\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>?) and I did that on half the eyes I made and baked them. I want to try using Lisa Pavelka&#8217;s <a title=\"Lisa Pavelka Magic-Glos\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0023SXKYU\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B0023SXKYU&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=secroforgapeo-20\" target=\"_blank\">Magic Glos<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=secroforgapeo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B0023SXKYU\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> on the rest, but since the sun has gone down here, that will have to wait until tomorrow. Check back then, I promise to update!<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, happy creating!<\/p>\n<p>****** Update 3\/21\/2014 ******<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/faux-glass-eyes.JPG\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" alt=\"faux glass eyes\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/faux-glass-eyes.JPG\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are the results after using\u00a0the Magic Glos\u00a0on three other pairs of eyes. The upper row was done with Deco Gel and the lower row I did this morning with Magic Glos resin. It&#8217;s cured in UV light, so I stuck the eyes \u00a0to a piece of cardstock, applied the resin and put them out in the sunshine for 20 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>My findings comparing the two:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Lisa Pavelka Magic-Glos\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0023SXKYU\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B0023SXKYU&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=secroforgapeo-20\" target=\"_blank\">Magic Glos<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Pros &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>no need for another oven baking step<\/li>\n<li>resin is perfectly crystal clear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cons &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>you need a $30 UV light or a sunny day to cure it<\/li>\n<li>you need to be especially careful of bubbles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a title=\"Fimo Decorating Gel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B002PNNJ9Y\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B002PNNJ9Y&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=secroforgapeo-20\" target=\"_blank\">Fimo Deco Gel<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Pros &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>can be cured in any weather, without any additional equipment<\/li>\n<li>is slightly less expensive than Magic Glos<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cons &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>not crystal clear (it can be cleared up a bit with a heat gun after baking, but it will never be as clear as resin)<\/li>\n<li>doesn&#8217;t dome as much as the resin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So I would use the Deco Gel in a pinch, if I absolutely had to get something done at night and crystal clarity wasn&#8217;t an issue.
