{"id":322,"date":"2010-11-21T17:14:06","date_gmt":"2010-11-21T22:14:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/?p=322"},"modified":"2011-12-20T21:07:53","modified_gmt":"2011-12-21T02:07:53","slug":"topsy-turvy-doll-free-pattern-and-directions-part-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/2010\/11\/21\/topsy-turvy-doll-free-pattern-and-directions-part-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Topsy-Turvy Doll \u2013 Free Pattern and Directions, Part 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome back to the final day of our Topsy-Turvy doll directions.\u00a0 For the previous days, see:\u00a0 <a title=\"Topsy Turvy doll pattern - part 1\" href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/2010\/11\/18\/topsy-turvy-doll-free-pattern-and-directions-part-1\/\" target=\"_self\">part 1<\/a>, <a title=\"Topsy Turvy doll pattern - part 2\" href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/2010\/11\/19\/topsy-turvy-doll-free-pattern-and-directions-part-2\/\" target=\"_self\">part 2<\/a>, <a title=\"Topsy Turvy doll pattern - part 3\" href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/2010\/11\/20\/topsy-turvy-doll-free-pattern-and-directions-part-3\/\" target=\"_self\">part 3<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today we&#8217;ll make the yarn hair for our doll.\u00a0 I used Red Heart brand in worsted weight, but you can use whatever you like or have on hand.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll need to find a book (or a rigid object) that is 14&#8243; across.\u00a0 Wrap the yarn around this object 80-100 times.\u00a0 (I got a little overenthusiastic and wrapped mine 130 times!\u00a0\u00a0As a result, my doll&#8217;s hairs is\u00a0a bit thicker than strictly necessary. Ah well.)\u00a0 If you have thinner yarn make more wraps, or use less wraps for thicker yarn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-hair-wraps.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-hair-wraps.jpg\" alt=\"topsy-turvy-doll-hair-wraps\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once your book is all wrapped, find the center of this bundle of yarn.\u00a0 To hold the yarns in place for sewing, place a piece of painter&#8217;s tape slightly to one side of center and another to the other side of center, leaving a 1\/2&#8243; gap.\u00a0 Do this on both sides of the book.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-hair-taped.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-hair-taped.jpg\" alt=\"topsy-turvy-doll-hair-taped\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, gently slide your yarn off the book.\u00a0 (This is the tricky part, just take your time.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t worry if it gets a little messed up while sliding.)\u00a0 Your yarn bundle should look something like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-hair-bundle.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-hair-bundle.jpg\" alt=\"topsy-turvy-doll-hair-bundle\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lengthen the stitch on your sewing machine and sew down the middle of your bundle of yarn, right between the two pieces of tape.\u00a0 To keep the yarns from getting caught on the presser foot and feed dogs, sandwich your bundle between two pieces of waxed paper while sewing.\u00a0 Make sure to backstitch to secure both ends.\u00a0 Gently remove the tape and waxed paper.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-sewn-hair-bundle.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-sewn-hair-bundle.jpg\" alt=\"topsy-turvy-doll-sewn-hair-bundle\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hand stitch the seam to your doll&#8217;s head.\u00a0 This seam becomes the center part of her hair.\u00a0 Since mine was so thick, and difficult to sew, I also lifted up the hair on either side of the part and applied a line of glue to further secure it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-glue-for-hair.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-glue-for-hair.jpg\" alt=\"topsy-turvy-doll-glue-for-hair\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Repeat this wig-making process to make hair for the other side of the doll.<\/p>\n<p>You can now style your doll&#8217;s hair as desired.\u00a0 If you want to trim the yarn loops, that&#8217;s fine.\u00a0 I left in the loops because this doll is going to a two-year old and I don&#8217;t want her to be able to pull out single strands of yarn.\u00a0 My day doll&#8217;s hair is pulled back and the night doll&#8217;s hair is in ponytails.<\/p>\n<p>If desired, hand sew the nightcap to the sleeping doll&#8217;s head.\u00a0 Now is the time to add whatever other trimmings you like.\u00a0 I gave the day doll a ribbon rose and\u00a0sash for her dress and flowers for her hair.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The sleeping doll got\u00a0 a ribbon rose on her bodice, ribbons on her pigtails\u00a0and a teddy bear.\u00a0 I had to carefully position the bear so that it didn&#8217;t show as a big lump under the day dress.<\/p>\n<p>And here she is, once again.\u00a0 Hope my granddaughter loves her!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/2010-11-topsy-turvy-doll-awake.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/2010-11-topsy-turvy-doll-awake.jpg\" alt=\"topsy turvy doll awake\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/2010-11-topsy-turvy-doll-asleep.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/2010-11-topsy-turvy-doll-asleep.jpg\" alt=\"topsy turvy doll asleep\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you decide to make a topsy turvy doll of your own, please send me pictures.\u00a0 I&#8217;d love to see what you&#8217;ve done!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome back to the final day of our Topsy-Turvy doll directions.\u00a0 For the previous days, see:\u00a0 part 1, part 2, part 3.
