Ok, I’m not sure if this page is cool, or if it just looks like a steampunk convention exploded on it.<\/p>\n

Perhaps I was having a wee bit<\/em>\u00a0too much fun with all those gadgets and gears?<\/p>\n

Anyhow, when I saw Tim’s Day 8 steampunk tag<\/a>, I knew it would be just perfect for the photos of my son’s 17th birthday.<\/p>\n

For the title I used\u00a0Tim Holtz Idea-ology Alpha Parts: Newsprint<\/a>\"\".\u00a0\u00a0I rubbed on a bit of\u00a0pewter from the\u00a0Metallic Rub-On Kit #2<\/a>\"\"\u00a0and then coated them with\u00a0Glossy Accents<\/a>. \u00a0(I wish my store had had these,\u00a0Tim Holtz Idea-ology Alpha Parts: Ransom<\/a>\"\",\u00a0I think they’re much cooler.)<\/p>\n

This clock is set at 2:22, because that’s his date of birth. \u00a0The other clock hands are at 1:12, that’s the time of day he was born.<\/p>\n

For the gears I used the\u00a0Gadget Gears Die<\/a>\"\",\u00a0Steampunk On The Edge Die<\/a>\"\"\u00a0and the\u00a0Weathered Clock Bigz Die<\/a>\"\".<\/p>\n

Some of the gears were cut out of\u00a0Grungeboard<\/a>\u00a0and were painted with\u00a0Brushed Pewter Distress Crackle Paint<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0Tarnished Brass Distress Crackle Paint<\/a>\"\", and Deco Art Dazzling Metallics-Worn Penny<\/a>\"\". \u00a0(When I put that last paint on my craft sheet, I exclaimed, “It really does look like a penny!”)<\/p>\n

Once the paint was dry I sanded the edges, then inked them with\u00a0Walnut Stain\u00a0Distress Ink. \u00a0After applying the ink, wipe off the excess with a damp towel. \u00a0This leaves the ink only in the cracks and on the sanded edges.<\/p>\n

I love the worn, aged look!<\/p>\n

For other\u00a0embellishments\u00a0I used\u00a0Tim Holtz Idea Ology Game Spinners<\/a>,\u00a0Tim Holtz Idea-ology Trinket Pins<\/a>,\u00a0Sprocket Gears<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Advantus Tim Holtz Idea Ology Swivel Clasps<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To add depth I cut other gears out of clear plastic (leftover packaging) and used the Ink Blending Tool\u00a0(with felt, not foam) to color them\u00a0with a variety of alcohol inks. \u00a0I used\u00a0Butterscotch<\/a>,\u00a0Terra Cotta<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Ginger<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0Gold Metallic Mixative<\/a>, and\u00a0Pesto<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Meadow<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0Silver Metallic Mixative<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Don’t be afraid to add some\u00a0Alcohol Blending Solution<\/a>\u00a0if your colors are too intense or need to be blended more. \u00a0And don’t overdo it with the metallic mixatives, a single drop on your felt will go a long, long way.<\/p>\n

(I’m so glad I can look back on the coffee-on-my-hard-drive incident and smile. \u00a0I was insanely angry at the time. )<\/p>\n

The bits of fireworks paper are from Tim’s\u00a0Seasonal Paper Stash Paper Pad\u00a0are a tribute to Dan’s pyromania. \u00a0My husband and I firmly believe it’s only by God’s mercy that Daniel never managed to burn down the house.<\/p>\n

I’m pretty sure I found the bean bag chair directions online, but I can’t find them right now. \u00a0If I do, I’ll be sure to share them with you. \u00a0It’s a great project for a guy!<\/p>\n

Although I cut the Filmstrip Frames Decorative Strip Die<\/a>\"\"\u00a0out of plastic, I don’t recommend it. The sizzlits dies aren’t meant to cut through very thick materials. \u00a0Since my packaging was only partially cut, I had to go back over each frame with a craft knife to cut out the windows. \u00a0This was then inked with\u00a0Espresso<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Ginger<\/a>\u00a0alcohol inks. \u00a0I like the look but it was rather a pain.<\/p>\n
