{"id":308,"date":"2010-11-18T14:53:34","date_gmt":"2010-11-18T19:53:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/?p=308"},"modified":"2012-01-25T12:01:00","modified_gmt":"2012-01-25T17:01:00","slug":"topsy-turvy-doll-free-pattern-and-directions-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/2010\/11\/18\/topsy-turvy-doll-free-pattern-and-directions-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Topsy-Turvy Doll \u2013 Free Pattern and Directions, Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I used to sew so\u00a0many so many of the Christmas gifts for my family, but as my boys got older I did less and less.\u00a0 However, now that I have a granddaughter,\u00a0it feels good to\u00a0get back into it!<\/p>\n<p>This year I&#8217;m making Cady\u00a0this topsy-turvy doll.\u00a0 On one end the dolly is awake, flip up her dress and she&#8217;s asleep in her flannel nightgown and cap.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve made several of these over the years, and it&#8217;s always fun.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There&#8217;s something quite charming and magical about them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/2010-11-topsy-turvy-doll-awake.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/2010-11-topsy-turvy-doll-awake.jpg\" alt=\"topsy turvy doll awake\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/2010-11-topsy-turvy-doll-asleep.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/2010-11-topsy-turvy-doll-asleep.jpg\" alt=\"topsy turvy doll asleep\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to make your own dolly for someone special, you can find <a title=\"Topsy Turvy doll - free pattern\" href=\"http:\/\/www.keepsakecrafts.net\/topsy_turvy_doll_pattern.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">the patterns here<\/a>.\u00a0 (When you print out the patterns, make sure to tape together the two body sections along the thin line, matching the marks.)<\/p>\n<p>For materials you&#8217;ll need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1\/3 yard flesh tone fabric for head\/ body and arms<\/li>\n<li>1\/2\u00a0yard fabric for day dress<\/li>\n<li>5\/8\u00a0yard flannel fabric for nightgown and cap<\/li>\n<li>2\u00a0yards lace trim for day dress<\/li>\n<li>3 yards lace trim for nightgown and cap<\/li>\n<li>1\u00a0yard ribbon to trim waist of day dress<\/li>\n<li>1 yard 1\/4&#8243; elastic<\/li>\n<li>polyfil stuffing<\/li>\n<li>permanent markers or embroidery floss for faces<\/li>\n<li>yarn for hair<\/li>\n<li>additional trims such as ribbon roses, ribbons for hair, teddy bear, if desired<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Start by making the faces.\u00a0 I often embroider them with embroidery floss.\u00a0 If you do so, I recommend you just trace the head\/body pattern onto your fabric but don&#8217;t cut it out until after the embroidery is done.\u00a0 This gives you material for your hoop to grip onto.\u00a0\u00a0 Or you can do like I did this year and color in the faces with markers.\u00a0 Make sure to use permanent markers that won&#8217;t run if they get wet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-awake-face.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-awake-face.jpg\" alt=\"topsy-turvy-doll-awake-face\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I used my <a title=\"Pigma Micron Pen set in size 01\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B001CRIGZQ?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=secroforgapeo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B001CRIGZQ\" target=\"_blank\">Pigma Micron Pen set in size 01<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=secroforgapeo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B001CRIGZQ\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0for the black outlines and red for the lips.\u00a0 I used the brush tip end of a <a title=\"Marvy Le Plume II double ended marker set\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0008G1ULY?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=secroforgapeo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B0008G1ULY\" target=\"_blank\">Marvy Le Plume II <\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=secroforgapeo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B0008G1ULY\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>in Salvia Blue to color in the eyes.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t forget to add a tiny bit of white for the catchlights in the eyes.\u00a0 Acrylic paint on a toothpick will work nicely for that bit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-sleepy-face.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-sleepy-face.jpg\" alt=\"topsy-turvy-doll-sleepy-face\" width=\"402\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cut out all pattern pieces from the indicated fabrics.\u00a0 In addition to the <a title=\"Topsy Turvy doll - free pattern\" href=\"http:\/\/www.keepsakecrafts.net\/topsy_turvy_doll_pattern.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">pattern pieces in the pdf,<\/a> you&#8217;ll need to cut a 10&#8243;x40&#8243; piece from each of the day dress and nightgown fabrics for the skirts and a 13&#8243; circle from the nightgown fabric for the nightcap.<\/p>\n<p>The head\/body patterns in the pdf need to be joined together before cutting out.\u00a0 In the photo below you can see the shape you will have (weird, huh?)\u00a0 (You DO NOT need to have a seam at the waistline like I do.\u00a0 I\u00a0had some small pieces of fleshtone fabrics that needed to be pieced this way.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-body-pattern-shape.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-body-pattern-shape.jpg\" alt=\"topsy-turvy-doll-body-pattern-shape\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bodice\/sleeve pieces are a little confusing.\u00a0 They are cut on TWO folds.<\/p>\n<p>*****Update 1\/25\/2012******<\/p>\n<p>Several folks have been confused by this step, so I&#8217;ve added some photos that I hope will clear it up.<\/p>\n<p>First, make a fold in your fabric that is a little deeper than the pattern piece, about 4.5&#8243;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/topsy-turvy-doll-2-bodice-on-two-folds-1st-fold.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/topsy-turvy-doll-2-bodice-on-two-folds-1st-fold.jpg\" alt=\"topsy-turvy-doll-2-bodice-on-two-folds-1st-fold\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next, fold the fabric again, this time perpendicular to the first fold.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/topsy-turvy-doll-2-bodice-on-two-folds-2nd-fold.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/topsy-turvy-doll-2-bodice-on-two-folds-2nd-fold.jpg\" alt=\"topsy-turvy-doll-2-bodice-on-two-folds-2nd-fold\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now you have two adjacent folds, at a 90\u00b0 angle to each other. Place the pattern piece on the fabric with the long &#8220;place on fold&#8221; edge along the long fold, and the shorter &#8220;place on fold&#8221; edge along the shorter fold.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/topsy-turvy-doll-2-bodice-on-two-folds-pattern-in-place.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/topsy-turvy-doll-2-bodice-on-two-folds-pattern-in-place.jpg\" alt=\"topsy-turvy-doll-2-bodice-on-two-folds-pattern-in-place\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a close up of the corner when the folds meet. As you can see, you will be cutting through four thicknesses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/topsy-turvy-doll-2-bodice-on-two-folds-pattern-in-place-close-up.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/topsy-turvy-doll-2-bodice-on-two-folds-pattern-in-place-close-up.jpg\" alt=\"topsy-turvy-doll-2-bodice-on-two-folds-pattern-in-place-close-up\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The resulting piece looks like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-dress-bodice.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-dress-bodice.jpg\" alt=\"topsy-turvy-doll-dress-bodice\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You will need to cut along one of the short folds to make the dress back opening.<\/p>\n<p>Hope that is clear! \u00a0Please feel free to contact me with any questions.<\/p>\n<p>A 1\/4&#8243; seam allowance is used throughout, unless stated otherwise. (Seam allowances are included in the patterns.)<\/p>\n<p>Once the faces have been completed you can sew the two body\/head sections together, meeting right sides and leaving an opening where indicated.\u00a0 Also sew the arm pieces to make 4 arms.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-arm.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-arm.jpg\" alt=\"topsy-turvy-doll-arm\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a>Here&#8217;s a great trick for any time you need to leave an opening for turning:\u00a0 Sew perpendicular to the seam from the\u00a0raw edge\u00a0in to the seam line, then sew your seam.\u00a0 At the end of the seam sew back to the raw edge.\u00a0 Now, when you turn your piece right side out, it&#8217;s very easy to find where you need to sew up the opening.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-leaving-an-opening-for-turning.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/topsy-turvy-doll-leaving-an-opening-for-turning.jpg\" alt=\"topsy-turvy-doll-leaving-an-opening-for-turning\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Clip all curves, turn all pieces right side out and stuff with fiberfill.\u00a0When you stuff the hands, stuff the fingers only lightly, as later\u00a0we&#8217;ll be machine stitching in lines to make fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a tip for smooth stuffing:\u00a0 Whichever side of the project you want to look smoothest (the faces in this instance) have that side DOWN while you are stuffing.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t know why it works, but it always does.<\/p>\n<p>Once all the pieces are stuffed, hand sew the openings closed.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m off to finish stuffing now, and then to bed.\u00a0 Check back tomorrow for more of the directions.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Topsy Turvy Doll part 2\" href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/2010\/11\/19\/topsy-turvy-doll-free-pattern-and-directions-part-2\/\">Click here to go directly to part 2.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I used to sew so\u00a0many so many of the Christmas gifts for my family, but as my boys got older I did less and less.\u00a0 However, now that I have a granddaughter,\u00a0it feels good to\u00a0get back into it!
