Well, color me amazed.\u00a0 It\u2019s the 4th<\/sup> of December and I\u2019ve managed to accomplish projects inspired by three of Tim\u2019s 12 Tags of Christmas so far.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t know what I\u2019m talking about, Tim Holtz is only the king of all things distressed and paper crafty.\u00a0 Check out his web site here<\/a>.\u00a0 Even if you aren\u2019t into paper crafting, you\u2019ll have to be impressed.<\/p>\n

Tim loves to demonstrate his creative techniques on large manila shipping tags.\u00a0 Five years ago he started doing the 12 Tags of Christmas on his blog.\u00a0 Every day from December 1st<\/sup> through the 12th<\/sup> at midnight he posts a new tag, full of clever tricks with ink and paper.\u00a0 He always includes step-by-step directions with excellent photos.<\/p>\n

I stumbled across him in his second year of doing the tags and made Christmas cards based on his tags each day.\u00a0 Silly me didn\u2019t take photos of all of them, but here are a few.<\/p>\n

The next year I decided to just make the tags.<\/p>\n

Last year, well\u2026 erm.\u00a0 See this stack of paper?<\/p>\n

Yup, those are the directions from last year\u2019s<\/span> tags, all printed out and neatly clipped together by day.\u00a0 And, yes, they have been sitting on my desk for an entire year.<\/em><\/p>\n

So, back to today!\u00a0 I\u2019m so happy to report as of tonight I am nearly caught up (with this year, not last year!) \u00a0I attribute this to two reasons: 1) I\u2019ve been collecting Tim\u2019s supplies for three years now and can pretty much make do, even if I don\u2019t have the exact items he used, and 2) I decided to only\u00a0use his techniques, <\/em>but\u00a0not worry about making copies<\/strong> of what he\u2019s done.<\/p>\n

In fact, I was in Michaels on Thursday, December 1st, 40% off coupon in hand, and walked out without buying anything<\/em>. \u00a0This is mind blowing.\u00a0 Seriously.<\/p>\n

This change of mind set is actually incredibly freeing. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

For day one<\/a>, I made this card.<\/p>\n

The main technique was to ink up the background portion only of the embossing folder.\u00a0 After running through your die cutting machine you sprinkle on embossing powder, it only sticks on the inner parts of the pattern.\u00a0 Kinda neat. I love how it came out using the Merry Christmas embossing folder set<\/a>\"\".<\/p>\n

It only took me 20 minutes to dig up this pinecone which was left over from a class I took with Tim last year.\u00a0 Perfect.<\/p>\n

For day two<\/a>, I did a scrapbook layout.\u00a0 The main technique was to use Picket Fence Distress Stain<\/a>\"\" over resist paper.\u00a0 Did you know that you can make any paper a resist paper with a large background stamp (like this Harlequin Background Stamp<\/a>\"\", and Clear Embossing Powder<\/a>?<\/p>\n

And here it is after adding ink. \u00a0See how the embossed areas resist the ink? \u00a0Pretty cool.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t have any sticky back canvas, but I\u2019ve got plenty of fabric.\u00a0 To stabilize it, I stuck this to some sticky back vellum and cut out trees using my\u00a0Sizzix Medium Pine Tree Die (yellow die) and\u00a0Sizzix Pine Tree Die<\/a>\u00a0(red die.)<\/p>\n

The trees were inked with every shade of green distress ink I own, including\u00a0Peeled Paint<\/a>,\u00a0Pine Needles<\/a>,\u00a0Bundled Sage\u00a0and\u00a0Shabby Shutters, with some\u00a0Vintage Photo\u00a0and\u00a0Walnut Stain\u00a0for the trunks.<\/p>\n

The brown paper \u00a0is from the Retro Grunge Paper Stash<\/a>\"\"; it was cut with the Bracket on the Edge Die<\/a>\"\". \u00a0These make great borders and accents.<\/p>\n

And here’s the layout, all ready for photos.\u00a0The map and blueprint papers are from Tim\u2019s Crowded Attic Paper Stash<\/a>\"\". \u00a0 The diagonal stripe is from a paper collection I got at Costco.<\/p>\n

Here’s the left side of the layout. \u00a0If the photo of the baby looks familiar, it’s because I used it in a Photoshop tutorial<\/a> a while back. (That baby is 23 years old, btw. \u00a0Wow, I am behind in my scrapbooking, lol.)<\/p>\n

Here’s the right side. The journaling is done on paper cut with the Tattered Banners Die Strip<\/a>\"\".\u00a0 I also used it on the card from day one, above. The more I use this, the more I love<\/em><\/strong> it.)<\/p>\n

Here’s a close up of the fabric trees. \u00a0I really love following Tim’s lead because he reminds us to add in detail, such as dying the ribbon with distress inks, or beating up the brads with a hammer.<\/p>\n
