{"id":2305,"date":"2011-08-05T10:27:07","date_gmt":"2011-08-05T14:27:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/?p=2305"},"modified":"2011-12-09T17:43:32","modified_gmt":"2011-12-09T22:43:32","slug":"ruffled-pillow-quick-home-dec-weekend-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/2011\/08\/05\/ruffled-pillow-quick-home-dec-weekend-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Ruffled Pillow &#8211; Quick Home Dec Weekend Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was poking around at Costco the other day and saw\u00a0this fantastic\u00a0ruffled pillow.\u00a0 It made me think of something you&#8217;d find at Pier One or Pottery Barn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/costco-ruffled-pillow_0.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/costco-ruffled-pillow_0.jpg\" alt=\"costco-ruffled-pillow_0\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a moment studying it,\u00a0I said, &#8220;Hmmm, I could make that.&#8221;\u00a0 And so I have, it took just a couple of hours.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/sewing\/ruffled-pillow.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/sewing\/ruffled-pillow.jpg\" alt=\"ruffled-pillow\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Costco version was made out of a velour, I made mine out of polar fleece.\u00a0 Whatever you use, you&#8217;ll want to choose a fabric that doesn&#8217;t ravel or fray.<\/p>\n<p>This pillow doesn&#8217;t have any zippers or closures, but uses my favorite pillow technique of making overlapping flaps for the back.\u00a0 Super quick and easy!<\/p>\n<p>You will need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>18&#8243; pillow form<\/li>\n<li>1 3\/8 yards 58&#8243;-60&#8243; wide (or 2 yards 40&#8243; wide) non-fraying fabric such as fleece<\/li>\n<li>rotary cutter and ruler (helpful, but you can just use scissors)<\/li>\n<li>sewing machine and matching thread<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Step 1, Pillow Front and Back:<\/p>\n<p>For your pillow front, cut a 16.5&#8243; square. For the back, cut 2 pieces 16.5&#8243; x 10.5&#8243;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-1-cut-front-and-back.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-1-cut-front-and-back.jpg\" alt=\"ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-1-cut-front-and-back\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 2, Cut Squares for Ruffles:<\/p>\n<p>Cut the remaining fabric into 80-100 4&#8243; squares.\u00a0 This is where a rotary cutter and ruler come in handy.<\/p>\n<p>Btw, I was using a piece of fleece that I had on hand and only had enough fabric to make 65 squares.\u00a0 I wouldn&#8217;t have minded my pillow being more full, but I&#8217;m still pleased with it, so if you have to, just go with what you&#8217;ve got.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-2-cut-squares.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-2-cut-squares.jpg\" alt=\"ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-2-cut-squares\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 3, Sew the Ruffles To the Pillow Front:<\/p>\n<p>Pick up a 4&#8243; square and gather the center in your fingers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-3-pinch-squares.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-3-pinch-squares.jpg\" alt=\"ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-3-pinch-squares\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Stitch this ruffle through the gathered center at the exact middle of your pillow front. Backstitch to secure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-3a-stitch-down-squares.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-3a-stitch-down-squares.jpg\" alt=\"ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-3a-stitch-down-squares\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Continue to stitch ruffles\u00a0 in a row down the center of your pillow front.\u00a0 I had rows of 8 ruffles, if you have 100 squares you can make rows of 10.\u00a0 Just space them by eye, it doesn&#8217;t have to be exact.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t stop to trim the thread tails between the ruffles until you are all done with each row.\u00a0 This will save a lot of time and thread.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the first row:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-3-b-first-row.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-3-b-first-row.jpg\" alt=\"ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-3-b-first-row\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now go ahead and stitch a second row, with the ruffles facing in the opposite direction (Turned 90\u00b0.)\u00a0 You&#8217;ll want this second row to be &#8220;crowding&#8221; the first row so that the cut edges of the ruffles\u00a0are facing up, rather than lying flat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-3c-second-row.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-3c-second-row.jpg\" alt=\"ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-3c-second-row\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now continue sewing down rows of ruffles, alternating directions.\u00a0 Leave about 1&#8243; clear all around the edge of your pillow front so we can sew it to the back later.<\/p>\n<p>Here are all the rows stitched:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-3d-all-rows.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-3d-all-rows.jpg\" alt=\"ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-3d-all-rows\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 4, Sew On the Pillow Back:<\/p>\n<p>First you&#8217;ll need to take some time to pin all the ruffles out of the way of the seam allowance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-4-pinned-out-of-the-way.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-4-pinned-out-of-the-way.jpg\" alt=\"ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-4-pinned-out-of-the-way\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now you can pin on one of your 16.5&#8243; x 10.5&#8243; pillow back pieces.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-5-add-half-of-back.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-5-add-half-of-back.jpg\" alt=\"ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-5-add-half-of-back\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now pin the other 16.5&#8243; x 10.5&#8243; to the other side (there will be a 4&#8243; overlap in the center) and stitch with a 1\/2&#8243; seam allowance around all four sides.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-6-stitch-all-around.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/tutorial-steps\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-6-stitch-all-around.jpg\" alt=\"ruffles-pillow-tutorial-step-6-stitch-all-around\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Turn right side out, insert your pillow form and voila, you are done!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/sewing\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-completed.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/sewing\/ruffles-pillow-tutorial-completed.jpg\" alt=\"ruffles-pillow-tutorial-completed\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Isn&#8217;t that fun?\u00a0 It&#8217;s very squishy and comfy to use, too.<\/p>\n<p>Next I think I&#8217;ll use\u00a0several bits of leftover pink and purple fleece for a wonderfully &#8220;girly&#8221;
