Snowman Ornament"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My quilting group decided to do Christmas in July for this month&#8217;s meeting.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve made many, many quilts for missionaries and charity, but sometimes we just stop and do a little fun project for ourselves.\u00a0 On Saturday we&#8217;ll be making these:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/snowman-ornament-complete.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/snowman-ornament-complete.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-complete\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since I was prepping what we&#8217;d need, I thought I&#8217;d share the steps with you.\u00a0\u00a0Here is where you\u00a0can find a pdf with the <a title=\"snowman ornament patterns\" href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/snowman_ornament_patterns.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">snowman ornament patterns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>scraps of white fabric for the snowmen (If I figured correctly, you&#8217;ll get about 10 snowmen from a single fat quarter.)<\/li>\n<li>scraps of fabric for the hat (2.5&#8243; x 4&#8243;) and scarf (1&#8243; x 9&#8243;)<\/li>\n<li>hand sewing needle and thread<\/li>\n<li>small amount of orange oven bake clay (Fimo, Sculpey) for nose<\/li>\n<li>small black beads or black oven bake clay for eyes and mouth<\/li>\n<li>hot glue<\/li>\n<li>tacky glue<\/li>\n<li>toothpick<\/li>\n<li>tweezers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From the white fabric cut one 4&#8243; circle and one 3.5&#8243; circle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-1-cut-out-circles.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-1-cut-out-circles.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-1-cut-out-circles\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thread a needle with white thread.\u00a0 Turning under a 1\/8&#8243; inch seam allowance as you go, make large running stitches close to folded edge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-2-gather.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-2-gather.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-2-gather\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When you get back to where you started pull up gathers and flatten yo-yo so hole is in the center.\u00a0 Tie off thread ends in a square knot and cut off excess thread.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-3-make-yo-yos.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-3-make-yo-yos.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-3-make-yo-yos\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Hint:\u00a0 When tying your knot use a surgeon&#8217;s square knot, which simply means to make the first wrap (right over\u00a0left)\u00a0twice, then pull tight.\u00a0 This holds everything in place while you make the second wrap (left over right.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Repeat to make second\u00a0yo-yo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-3-yo-yos.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-3-yo-yos.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-3-yo-yos\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Make hat:<\/p>\n<p>Fold 4&#8243; x 2.5&#8243; rectangle in half, meeting shorter edges.\u00a0 Sew a 1\/4&#8243; seam along these edges, backstitching at beginning and end.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-4-seam-hat.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-4-seam-hat.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-4-seam-hat\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finger press seam open and turn this tube right side out.<\/p>\n<p>Turn one raw edge up 1\/4&#8243;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-5-turn-hat-brim.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-5-turn-hat-brim.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-5-turn-hat-brim\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And turn up again 1\/4&#8243; to make hat brim.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-5-turn-hat-brim-again.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-5-turn-hat-brim-again.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-5-turn-hat-brim-again\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thread a needle with thread to match the hat fabric and gather remaining raw edge 1\/4&#8243; from edge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-6-gather-hat-top.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-6-gather-hat-top.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-6-gather-hat-top\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pull gathers tight and tie off.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-6-hat-top-gathered.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-6-hat-top-gathered.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-6-hat-top-gathered\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hot glue hat to small yo-yo and glue small yo-yo over large yo-yo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-7-glue-together-yo-yos-and-hat.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-7-glue-together-yo-yos-and-hat.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-7-glue-together-yo-yos-and-hat\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tie scarf around snowman&#8217;s neck, using a pin to fringe the ends.\u00a0 Hot glue down the ends, if desired.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-8-add-scarf.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-8-add-scarf.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-8-add-scarf\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To make the carrot nose pinch off a piece of oven bake clay about the size of a small pea.\u00a0 Roll it into a 1\/4&#8243; ball.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-9-carrot-nose.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-9-carrot-nose.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-9-carrot-nose\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Using one finger, roll it on your work surface, applying more pressure to one side than the other.\u00a0 This will shape it into a cone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-9b-carrot-nose.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-9b-carrot-nose.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-9b-carrot-nose\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Use the side of a needle to mark your &#8220;carrot&#8221; to make it more realistic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-9c-carrot-nose_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-9c-carrot-nose_1.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-9c-carrot-nose close up\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bake according to manufacturer&#8217;s directions.\u00a0 (Ten minutes at 250\u00b0 F worked fine for me.)\u00a0By the way, when using oven bake clay, never use utensils that you will be using with food.\u00a0 Parchment paper here protects the baking sheet and keeps the clay from becoming shiny.<\/p>\n<p>I made a bunch, figuring it&#8217;s easier to make more than I need now, rather than have to turn on the oven later to make just one.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-9-carrot-noses.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-9-carrot-noses.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-9-carrot-noses\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the baking sheet with all these itty bitty carrots was cooling on the counter my huband saw them and thought they were something I&#8217;d picked from the garden.\u00a0 Bwahahaha!<\/p>\n<p>For the eyes and mouth you can use small black beads (mine are 3mm) or make small black balls out of oven bake clay.\u00a0 You can also make french knots with embroidery floss, or just draw on the face with a marker.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-10-eyes-and-mouth.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-10-eyes-and-mouth.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-10-eyes-and-mouth\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If gluing on the eyes and mouth, I suggest you apply tiny dots of tacky glue with a toothpick, then use tweezers to place your beads exactly where you want them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-10b-eyes-and-mouth.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/pattern-covers-and-tutorial-steps\/snowman-ornament-step-10b-eyes-and-mouth.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-step-10b-eyes-and-mouth\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Use tacky glue to attach the nose.<\/p>\n<p><em>Warning:\u00a0 If you use hot glue to attach the nose, then decide you don&#8217;t like the gob of hot glue that oozed out and try to pick if off, you WILL break the nose.\u00a0 Just sayin&#8217;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Isn&#8217;t he cute?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/snowman-ornament-complete.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/crafts\/snowman-ornament-complete.jpg\" alt=\"snowman-ornament-complete\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now you can add some twine or ribbon to make an ornament, glue on a bamboo stick or some wire to make a plant poke, add him to a card&#8230;
