Today’s desk shows my preparation for getting serious about learning how to improve my machine quilting.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Last fall\u00a0a fellow quilter recommended Diane Gaudynski’s Guide To Machine Quilting<\/a>\"\".\u00a0 I checked it out of the library and had to agree, it was\u00a0fantastic<\/em>.\u00a0 So I bought me a copy and have been carefully reading it, taking notes and buying new tools ever since.\u00a0 (More about that another time.)<\/p>\n

\"2011-05-18-whats-on-your-workdesk-wednesday\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The quilt on the table is one I made years and years ago (1996, I think?) for a guild challenge.\u00a0 It won first place, and I won a pack of fabrics, with which I promptly started\u00a0the quilt below.\u00a0 It’s called the The Country Songbird Quilt<\/a>\"\".\u00a0 I actually have the center section completely done and the applique for the pillow section is complete.\u00a0 Just have to quilt that, then add the borders.\u00a0 THEN bind all those scallops, blah.\u00a0 (The photo below isn’t mine, it’s one I found online, so I know finishing it\u00a0IS possible, lol.)<\/p>\n

Back to the quilt on the table.\u00a0 I never did any quilting on it, so I’m going to use it as a practice piece before beginning work on a queen size wedding gift quilt.\u00a0 The wedding was, ahem, last August?\u00a0 I believe the etiquette rules say you have a year to get them a gift?\u00a0 (Maybe that’s just wishful thinking, haha.)\u00a0 Anyhow, it’s my goal to have it completed for them by their first anniversary.<\/p>\n

Can you believe <\/em>this woman’s machine quilting?!\u00a0 If I can get just a little bit close to what she does, I’ll be happy.<\/p>\n

Here’s a close up of the practice quilt.\u00a0 Surface embellishment is definitely my thing.\u00a0 But whatever you do, don’t ever, ever <\/strong>try to do silk ribbon embroidery with satin ribbon.\u00a0 Yup, even after 15 years I remember what a royal pain in the behind that was.<\/p>\n

On top of the quilting book is my sewing machine manual.\u00a0 I had pulled it out for help replacing the light bulb and started reading other pages, too.\u00a0 Would you believe that after owning this machine for 13 years, last night I learned three new things from that manual?\u00a0 Silly little, but very helpful\u00a0things I wish I’d known.\u00a0 Read those manuals, ladies & gents!<\/em><\/p>\n

Beside the books is a pile of bracelets I’ve been working on.\u00a0 Several got listed in my Etsy shop<\/a> this past weekend.\u00a0 If you’d like to make your own, I put up a video tutorial here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To the right of the bracelets is a white notepad.\u00a0 See that long list on the left?\u00a0 That’s a list of most <\/strong>of my pending sewing projects.\u00a0 The slightly shorter list on the right is of crafting projects.\u00a0 Sheeeeesh, no wonder I was feeling overwhelmed.\u00a0 Still am, kinda, lol.<\/p>\n

Finally, the white sticky-back felt is to make some jersey bracelets.<\/p>\n

Time to get off the computer and get busy!<\/p>\n
