{"id":1031,"date":"2011-01-19T19:01:35","date_gmt":"2011-01-20T00:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/?p=1031"},"modified":"2016-11-23T20:26:27","modified_gmt":"2016-11-24T01:26:27","slug":"crafting-with-packaging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/2011\/01\/19\/crafting-with-packaging\/","title":{"rendered":"Crafting With Packaging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>If you&#8217;re a <span>scrapbooker<\/span>, <span>cardmaker<\/span> or a <span>crafter<\/span> of any sort, I challenge you to save your plastic packaging and see what you can come up with.\u00a0 The possibilities are really endless:\u00a0 ink with alcohol inks, embossing, sanding, or use as a window in a card.\u00a0 You could even try applying heat, and get some interesting <span>melty<\/span> effects,\u00a0(for this\u00a0you should be very careful to have excellent ventilation.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a really cool card that I made with the clear packaging that my Sizzix Big Kick embossing machine came in:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/cards\/thinking-inking-thank-you-card-sm.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/keepsakecrafts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/cards\/thinking-inking-thank-you-card-sm.jpg\" alt=\"thinking inking thank you card with inked flowers\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>First I cut the plastic to the size of a standard card, 5.5&#8243; x 8.5&#8243; and then embossed it using the Sizzix <a title=\"Sizzix Cuttlebug A2 Embossing Folder, D'vine Swirls\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000O5EV2E?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=secroforgapeo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B000O5EV2E\" target=\"_blank\">Cuttlebug A2 Embossing Folder, D&#8217;vine Swirls<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=secroforgapeo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000O5EV2E\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>. This was <\/span><strong>heavy <\/strong><span>plastic, and it took\u00a0a little muscle to get it through the machine.\u00a0 Try experimenting with plastics from various packaging.\u00a0 Some will turn frosted at the embossing, which is another great look.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Next it was time to score along the fold line, <em>just firmly enough to make the card fold.<\/em><span>\u00a0 If you crease too hard, you may cause the plastic to crack along the line.\u00a0 It might take some experimenting with what you have<\/span><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When cutting the paper strips for decoration, keep in mind that you&#8217;ll need four.\u00a0 One for the front of the card, one for the inside, so you&#8217;ll have someplace to write a greeting and sign, and the others\u00a0 will go behind the first two (so, one on the inside of the card, behind the front decoration, and on the back of the card, behind the greeting\/signature.)\u00a0 This will cover up any adhesive and give a professional, finished look.<\/p>\n<p><span>To make the flowers, I covered\u00a0<a title=\"Grunge paper 12-Inch-by-12-Inch, 3-Pack\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0028FIP0C?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=secroforgapeo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B0028FIP0C\" target=\"_blank\">Grunge paper<\/a> with book paper, inked with a variety of distress inks and then cut out with the <span>Sizzix<\/span> Flower Charms #2 die.\u00a0 The shine you see is because I used a gloss finish <a title=\"Mod Podge Original 16-Ounce Glue, Gloss Finish\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00178QQJ8?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=secroforgapeo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00178QQJ8\" target=\"_blank\">Mod Podge<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=secroforgapeo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00178QQJ8\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> to decoupage the papers.\u00a0 I think I would have preferred a <a title=\"Mod Podge Original 16-Ounce Glue, Matte Finish\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B001IKES5O?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=secroforgapeo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B001IKES5O\" target=\"_blank\">Matte Finish<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=secroforgapeo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B001IKES5O\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>, but gloss is what I had.\u00a0
